Risky Biz Blog reports today that a few studios are desperately trying to get their hands on "Kick-Ass" after an effective panel at this year's Comic Con. A panel which I only caught the tale end of was everything the title claims and then some. The ultra-violent original comic book "Kick-Ass" was written by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. and followed a high school loser who becomes a masked superhero. The ordinary teen who is endlessly uncoordinated, fumbles his way through a few attempts at heroism only to be stepped up by another masked avenger named Hit-Girl and her father Big Daddy. The group team-up along with Red Mist in order to take down a local drug kingpin. The gritty nature of the book is the intial reason the film went the independent financing route in order to get into production. Now after a massive amount of buzz from Comic Con studios have a different tune and Lions gate, Paramount and Universal are all clawing to get a piece of "Kick-Ass".
The film adaptation is directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) and stars Aaron Johnson as Dave Lizewski aka Kick-Ass, Chloe Moretz as Hit-Girl, Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist. Matthew Vaughn penned the script with Jane Goldman off Millar's original comic. The film will most definately be a hard R-rating with a ton of profanity and violence geared for older audiences. "Kick-Ass" is aiming for a 2010 release.
It's nice to see that the production team stood their ground on making "Kick-Ass" the way it was intended to be seen and now it is paying off for them. Being a huge fan of the book, I would have hated to seen the story made kid friendly only to apease the MPAA for a PG-13. "Kick-Ass" is brutal and it is perfect that way. From what I saw at Comic Con this year, the film is going to be just as good as the comic. The footage displayed at the panel was fantastic. By far one of the top five high-lights of this year's Comic Con. The best part is that the film looks to match the integrity of the actual comic!
