'Kick-Ass' Goes to Lionsgate

Last week I reported about a few studios vying for Matthew Vaughn's "Kick-Ass". Today comes news that Lionsgate has won that battle and the studio who brought us Punisher: War Zone and the Saw series will release the comic book adaptation in 2010. Variety reports the studio has commited to a wide release. For more details read below...

Lionsgate seems like a decent fit for the ultra bloody comic film. Lionsgate who has released films like My Bloody Valentine, Crank: High Voltage and next years "Daybreakers" has never strayed away from the more adult fare and "Kick-Ass" lends itself to their interests. Lionsgate seemed like the best choice early on when Universal or Paramount seemed content on trimming some of the violence in order for a lesser rating. I would bet that while Universal and Paramount would have been willing to distribute "Kick-Ass" as a R-rated film, they probably would have been prone to still having some of the violence toned down. My only hope now it that Lionsgate gives "Kick-Ass" some solid promotions and marketing that will continue to build anticipation.

The film adaptation is directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) and stars Aaron Johnson as Dave Lizewski aka Kick-Ass, Chloe Moretz as Hit-Girl, Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist. Matthew Vaughn penned the script with Jane Goldman off Millar's original comic. More news on "Kick-Ass" as it develops...

What say you? Is Lionsgate a good fit for Kick-Ass? Strikeback...
