A interesting rumor popped up this week stating that Brad Pitt may in fact have a small cameo in Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. A London tabloid broke the rumor stating that Warner Bros. wanted a bigger setup of Sherlock Holmes most well known nemesis Moriarty, and Pitt would play him. Warner Brothers quickly debunked the tabloid claim seeming to hush the rumor, but yesterday MTV and Latino Review broke stories that may point to the claim being not so fabricated. Read the full story below...
MTV's reporter Josh Horowitz spoke with Mr. Ritchie about Moriarty and the Snatch director confirmed that Moriarty would in fact be in the film. While the director made sure not to make mention of any names he did say, "Some kind of an appearance is probably the best way to describe it." Ritchie also added when asked if the role was a credited performance, "I believe not." He then concluded with a nice tease. He said, "All will be revealed. I’m afraid I have to be slightly ambiguous about this but you’ll understand what I’m talking about when you see the movie." MTV points to his elusiveness being centered around having such a huge name like Brad Pitt attached as Moriarty.
I can imagine that if the rumors are true and Brad Pitt is indeed in "Sherlock Holmes" it will make a huge splash at the box office this Christmas. No doubt it would also help getting a sequel green lit and moving forward before too much time has passed. I loved Pitt under Ritchie's direction in Snatch and to see Pitt and Downey Jr. on screen together would be a real treat. Furthermore, how great would it be to see Pitt play a real villain?
It very well could be that we are getting excited for nothing about Pitt and that the Moriarty cameo could be an entirely different actor altogether. Latino Review points to another actor who was early rumored to be attached to the Warner Brothers film. The news source reminds us that Russell Crowe could be a potential for the Holmes nemesis. Back in September of 2008 El Mayimbe reported from a trusted source, "There is a very good chance that Russell Crowe is going to play Moriarty."
So who is it, Brad Pitt or Russell Crowe? Unless some other type of real confirmation comes along, looks as though we will just have to wait until Christmas to see whose playing Moriarty in Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes". More news on 'Holmes' as it develops...
What say you? Who would get you more excited Crowe or Pitt? Strikeback...
