WB Can't Decide How Superman Should Fly

Warner Brothers have been very unsure of what to do with one of DC's biggest heroes Superman. Superman Returns was deemed a failure by most and definately left the WB brass scratching their heads wondering where to go next. Should they continue with Singer's storyline that re-established the character from the 1970s films or rebuild from the ground up? Singer has said that he would beef up the action in the next film and compared it to the Star Trek sequel "Wrath of Khan." One thing is for sure, Superman cannot spend over an hour of the film fooling around with Lois Lane! Don't me wrong, unlike most, I really liked what Singer did with "Returns" (still, even I have my gripes with the film). Overall though, he really paid homage to Donner's work on the original two films, while still building the character for a younger generation. Unfortunately, the masses, and definately the younger generation did not feel the same way!

If the WB brass realize that people still want a Superman film, just not neccessarily a sequel to Superman Returns, they should do fine! One executive admitted, "It might be better to start from scratch." What is certain is that Warner Bros want to break the mold with Superman and if Singer returns and makes a similar film, it will merely fall into the same limbo as his first effort did. Anne Thompson reports that studio execs say, "it is a priority at the studio to find the right direction and if Bryan Singer is willing to do that, fine, but if he gets in the way, he may not stay on the project." So there it is for you, WB wants Superman made, but if Singer isn't willing to do what Warner Bros. wants, he's out! There is no script for the film as of yet and no screenwritters have been hired either. I would assume, the gears will begin to spin alot faster really quickly on this project, so that WB strikes while the iron is still hot and superhero movies are still in the general publics favor.

Here's my spin on what WB needs for Superman. Most of this is based off the idea that they move forward and Singer plays nice, meaning not a re-boot!

  • A real villain! Lex Luthor is awesome (Spacey nailed him), but he cannot be the only nemesis, instead he needs to behind the scenes running everything! Lex could create Bizarro to take down Supes, have Brainiac come to Earth and wreak havoc, or Doomsday could take Superman one-step away from death in the film! Those villains alongside of Lex or General Zod would be amazing (and that is just off the top of my head, wtf is the problem WB)!

  • Superman while he can stop a natural disaster, should not spend half the film doing just that! Too much time was spent stopping gas from exploding on the city, or the daily planet globe falling, or a plane crashing, or finally lifting a land mass out of the ocean. Where is a real villain that can put an ass-whooping on Supes? Again, Bizarro or Doomsday fit the bill!

  • Lois Lane is a huge plot point in Superman's history sure, but can she be cut down to a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes? Seriously, Singer spent way too much time on the love story between Superman and Lane, and I remember watching people begin to squirm in some of those longer scenes. The only highlight of the love story was superboy being introduced!

  • Justice League or other DC character tie-in's are a must! If Batman, Wonder Woman, Martain Man-Hunter or any other major DC heroes made an apperance, there is no doubt it would extremely intensify the hype! Batman had once said of Superman in the 2003 comic Superman/Batman issue #3, "In many ways, Clark is the most human of us all. Then...he shoots fire from the skies, and it is difficult not to think of him as a god. And how fortunate we all are that it does not occur to him." (I am just saying, fans would go ape shit if you had the bats in some way apart of a superman film.)

What are your thoughts on Superman? Will you go see another Singer Superman film? Do you want a complete re-boot? Should WB take Smallville and turn the series into feature films? What will get your butt in the seats for another go-round of the Man of Steel?
