Zemeckis 'Yellow' Confirmed

Disney confirmed today that Robert Zemeckis will indeed make a 3D motion capture remake of The Beatles "Yellow Submarine" at D23. Last month I reported that Disney and Zemeckis were intending to remake the 1968 animated film, but the rights to the music of the original soundtrack was that last piece of the puzzle in getting a remake into production. Unfortunately the mega-lawyers at Disney have worked their magic and "Yellow Submarine" will begin production shortly aiming for a 2012 release. The new film will incorporate all 16 songs from the original soundtrack.


Robert Zemeckis spoke a bit about his happiness in getting the project moving. He said, "'Yellow Submarine' is one of the greatest fantasy films of all time, and making this new 3D performance capture movie is a dream come true for me. With the latest advances in technology, we will be able to take moviegoers on a voyage unlike any other, and bring new excitement and dimension to Pepperland and the various sea worlds they encounter. I’m thrilled to be working with the good folks at Apple Corps and our partners at Disney on this epic retelling of one of my all time favorite films." The CEO of Apple Jeff Jones continued Zemeckis thoughts by saying, "With The Beatles and Walt Disney Studios, we have a partnership between two of the best loved creative entities in the world. We’re very excited about the magical fantasy that will result from this collaboration. The marriage of the music of The Beatles with the talent and technical wizardry of Robert Zemeckis and ImageMovers Digital should produce something very special."

They can all wax on about how great this is, but I remain unenthused. I love CGI and motion capture, but their are certain things that I believe should just be left alone. The original Yellow Submarine is an awesome animated film and it doesn't need a fresh coat of paint and new shinny bells to make it better. As Zemeckis said himself, "Yellow Submarine is one of the greatest fantasy films of all time." So why remake it? Shouldn't we be remaking stuff that isn't as good and give it a better spin? I am sure they will make it look spectacular, but for me, I am just not thrilled at all! More news on "Yellow Submarine" as it breaks...
