Holy crap! I never thought this report would actually come, but here we go! Warner Brothers Pictures have tapped Snatch director Guy Ritchie to helm an adaption of the iconic DC comic book anti-hero Lobo! "Lobo" intends to begin lensing next year with Ritchie's usual flare and will be a visual effects driven film targeting a PG13 rating. For the full scoop read the full article below...
Lobo was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen as a over-the-top parody to Marvel's X-Men character Wolverine and first appeared in DC Comics Omega Man #3 (1983). He is a 7 foot tall, blue skinned alien and is the last Czarnian. A race of aliens he himself destroyed, for nothing but the enjoyment of it. He is infatuated with mindless violence and intoxication, but does hold a very strong code of honor. Generally used as a inter-galactic bounty hunter, Lobo scours planet to planet seeking financing by working as a ruthless mercenary or bounty hunter.
Guy Ritchie will be working off a script Don Payne penned. Payne's script describes "Lobo" as a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero who drives a pimped out motorcycle, and lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc. Lobo teams with a small town teenaged girl to stop the creatures. Joel Silver, Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Rona will serve as producers on the film.
While I love Lobo and think Guy Ritchie could make one kick ass Lobo film, there are a few things that really get me nervous from this news. One PG13 and two "small town teenaged girl"! I can't say that either of those two pieces to "Lobo" make me all that inspired. The PG13 rating Ritchie can work with and there have been plenty examples of films that were still pretty gnarly and received a PG13. I can't lie and say I would much rather a R rating for "Lobo", what adult male would? [crickets]
The teenage girl angle just makes my stomach turn. I get the marketing stand point to have the teenage girl audience more inclined to see a brutal mercenary space alien who kills for fun movie, but this news definitely doesn't bode well with me. I can only see this taking a turn for the worse, hopefully Ritchie can prove me wrong on both of my initial issues with "Lobo".
Clearly the news does not give any indicators on exactly who (if anyone) WB is currently looking to play the blue alien. My first gut reaction to a muscle bound actor who could be Lobo is obviously Vin Diesel, but with his recent attachment to a third installment of xXx who knows if he is even a potential option. One last thing, Ritchie, we better see Dawg in the movie! Stay tuned as more develops on "Lobo"....
