Confirmation on Muppet Movie

Adding to the growing list of confirmations coming from this week's D23 in Anaheim is a report I am extremely excited about. Today at D23 Coming Soon tells us that guests were treated to a dance number on stage live from The Muppets! At the end of the performance Dick Cook, Disney Studios Chairman, announced the official title to the Jason Segel scripted film. For the full title all some more details scroll down...

*Drumroll* The official title is, "The Cheapiest Muppet Movie Ever Made". The title is something that has been mentioned before and was originally an unused title by Jim Henson himself back in 1985. The original 1985 concept was that Gonzo was going to direct his own movie. Gonzo spends his entire budget on the opening credits to his movie and as a result he is forced to shoot the rest of the film on one back lot, trying to create different settings out of the same spaces.

Peter Sciretta over at Slash Film though notes that Segel had mentioned the script being an entirely different take. He described Segel's script following The Muppets, "who must unite to save the Muppet Theater from an evil oil tycoon. As it turns out, the old theater its on top of some black gold." While the evil oil tycoon story sounds intriguing, I don't see a connection with the newly announced title.

Whether the script is one or the other or perhaps a combination of both remains to be seen, but I am ecstatic that a new Muppets movie is on the horizon, one that will feature Jason Segel in some form. More news on "The Cheapiest Muppet Movie Ever Made" as it develops...
