'Tron' & 'Hornet' Release Dates

Studios are always vying for the perfect date to release a movie and this week it appears that both Disney and Sony think December 17th, 2010 is just that. Already announced for the same date are Warner Brothers 3D motion-capture animated "Yogi Bear" and also Sony's CGI "Smurf's" movie. For all the specifics read the full story below...


Walt Disney Pictures will release "Tron Legacy" on December 17th, 2010. The film has had growing anticipation since 2008's San Diego Comic Con, when Disney showed attendees test footage that eventually propelled the overdue sequel into production. This year at San Diego Comic Con, Walt Disney presented the same footage from 2008, only having the footage rendered for 3D as the film will be when it is released next December. During the "Tron Legacy" panel director Joseph Kosinski showed the attendees lucky enough to get into Hall H some of the concept art to the sequel and also another clip that gave fans of the original film something to cheer about, while also providing a ton of nostalgia.

With Disney setting a December 2010 release date, it also means the studio will once again be able to return to Comic Con in 2010 and promote "Tron Legacy". Something that will definitely bolster both Tron fans and newcomers anticipation for the film, which would be due to release some 5 months later. Disney has always done a fabulous job with their panels at Comic Con so there is no reason to expect that they hold back in any way for "Tron Legacy" come Comic Con 2010.

Sony has realized that a July 9th, 2010 release date may be cutting it real close for Seth Rogen's "The Green Hornet", which only began lensing this week. The film is being directed by Michel Gondry and has been reported to be effects heavy film, so the new December 17th release date allows the director another 5 months to finish in post production. This is the third date change for Seth Rogen's take on the Britt Reid character. The date shift will likely mean that Sony's other film "Smurf's" also set for a December 17th release, will be shifted to another date. Like "Tron Legacy" the push for Sony will allow Rogen to once again promote "The Green Hornet" at Comic Con in 2010. It also means that next year, Rogen won't just be bringing the Green Hornet car to the massive event, but also some footage to show attendees.

In related "The Green Hornet" news, a recent press release for the start to production on Michel Gondry directed film came with two previously unannounced castings. Both David Harbour (Quantum of Solace) and Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton) have been cast in unnamed roles. Joining Seth Rogen in the action are Jay Chou as Kato, Cameron Diaz, Edward James Olmos and Nicholas Cage is in final negotiations to play the film's villain.
