If this rumor/hope turns out, I will be one gleeful horror fan! Earlier this month I reported on Twisted Pictures picking up the rights to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but new details have emerged that could mean something very positive for the next installment of 'Chainsaw'. Checkout the buzz below...
If your a fan of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, then undoubtedly, you are also a fan of Tobe Hooper. His work on the first two films is legendary! Imagine if Hooper returned to direct the next installment of the franchise? Too good for words right? Well it could happen. Ryan Rotten from Shock Till You Drop was at the recent "SAW VI" premiere party and noticed a few people rubbing elbows. Just who you ask? Well Rotten saw, Tobe Hooper himself sitting with Bill Moseley (who played Chop Top in Hooper's 1986 sequel) speaking with the Twisted Pictures crew. You might say, well there just talking, but there's more.
Hooper is now repped by Evolution, who just so happens, to share offices with Twisted Pictures. After Twisted swiped up the rights to 'Chainsaw' from Platinum Dunes they hired screenwriter Stephen Susco (The Grudge & The Grudge 2), who is also repped by Evolution. Twisted's plans are to ignore the Platinum Dunes efforts and return to contemporary version of the franchise. Twisted Pictures Mark Burg told Shock, "Make it current day and come up with a new story that takes some of the basic plot points, if you will, and make it a current day movie. I don't want to make another Chainsaw in the '70s, that doesn't thrill me." Quite frankly, I agree with Burg's assessment. And from what Rotten has been told, so is Hooper. Apparently the director has perked up to the idea of returning to what put the director on the map.
The idea of Hooper returning to 'Chainsaw' seems a lot more possible with all of the current directors going back to their old work, like Ridley Scott with Alien and David Cronenberg returning to The Fly. I think that Twisted would have an instant success on their hands IF Hooper did actually return. He is a legend among horror fans and bringing him back would be a HUGE step in the right direction. More news on this rumor as it develops....
