This week via Twitter, Production Weekly reported that Richard Linklater's untitled twelve year project was gearing up to shoot in Austin Texas. Linklater began working on documentary-esque film in 2002 following one boy and the relationship he develops over the course of twelve years with his parents. Or simply put, his childhood. Checkout the official title and some more details on Linklater's twelve year project below...
"Boyhood: Year 7" has been announced as the official title to the 12 year experimental film. Linklater who began shooting a few weeks out of every year in 2002 has worked with the same cast including Ellar Salmon (pictured above), Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, while piecing together skeleton crews to shoot in and around his home state of Texas. Salmon, who had a brief appearance in Linklater's 2006 film Fast Food Nation, was hired at 7 years old to play Mason. Linklater centered the film around him and his divorced parents (Arquette and Hawke). The film is shot in a documentary style and focuses on the bond between Mason and his mother as he grows from 1st grade through 12th grade and goes off to college.
Back in 2006, Linklater told MTV, "It's a crazy idea, but it's been an interesting process." While his idea is definitely outside the norm, "Boyhood: Year 7" is very much inspired by the Up series. A series of documentary films that has chronicled the lives of 14 British kids since 1964. "Boyhood: Year 7" will shoot next month in Austin Texas for 3 days. Detour Productions is financing and has planned a release for 2013. Check back for updates on 'Boyhood' as they develop...
What say you? Will 'Boyhood' prove to be worth all the years of production? Strikeback...
