Holy shit, news just came down the wire that Ryan Reynolds has infact been selected as Hal Jordan for the "Green Lantern" film being directed by Martin Campbell for Warner Brothers Pictures. Variety is reporting that Reynolds beat out other top considerations Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto and Justin Timberlake for the superhero role. This marks the third comic book film Ryan Reynolds will have made and the second major character he will play between the two rival comic book company's Marvel and DC. "Green Lantern" was written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green. Donald DeLine will produce along with Bertanti for WB, prodcution is expected to start in January.
I love Ryan Reynolds and think the world of him, but he definately would not have been my top choice. I guess this is the Deadpool fan in me talking, and I hate to see a Deadpool film get side-tracked due to Reynolds focusing on "Green Lantern". Another problem I have with the casting of Reynolds as Hal Jordan, he just is too sarcastic for the likes of Jordan. Reynolds is in every way the wise-cracking mercenary known as Deadpool, but I just don't see him as the steadfast Green Lantern. Clearly, director Martin Campbell and prodcuers Donald DeLine and Greg Berlanti have seen the test screenings and know what they want, but I remain unconvinced.
Quite honestly I am shocked I am so disappointed that Reynolds landed this gig. It is a huge opportunity for him. If the film is successful, it could develop a few sequels and there is always the long rumored Justice League of America film waiting in the wings. Once again, I guess it boils down to the fanboy in me, that I would rather see Reynolds playing Deadpool than Green Lantern. In a perfect world we will get to see Reynolds develop both characters a few times over.
What say you? Are pleased with the casting of Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan? Strikeback...
