New 'NIMH' in Development

One of my favorite cartoons as a kid was The Secret of NIMH, I would watch the movie endlessly along with a few other titles, but NIMH always remained with a very special place in my heart. Maybe it was the single mother desperately trying to protect her children, or perhaps a number of other things, but I loved that film through and through. Today comes news via THR that Paramount is developing a new feature film based off Robert C. O'Brien's childrens tale "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH". For more an this interesting scoop scroll down...

Paramount has landed Neil Burger (The Illusionist) to pen the screenplay and Cary Granat is attached to produce. The film will most undoubtably be a live action-CG hybrid similar to the likes of Garfield or more recently Alvin and the Chipmunks.

The original story follows a widowed field mouse, Mrs. Frisby, who seeks the aid of a group of former laboratory rats in rescuing her home from destruction by a farmer's plow, and of the history of the rats' escape from the laboratory and development of a literate and technological society.

For me I just hope that this new film is kept a bit serious and not too kiddie. Paramount hiring Neil Burger however, is a step in the right direction. Burger who has until now only dealt with more adult themes, should be able to scribe the story in a way that is compelling for both kids and adults.

What say you? Are you interested in a re-telling of NIMH? Strikeback...
