Peter and Michael Spierig are looking to shake things up a bit over at Warner Brothers. The twin brothers will be directing an update of the 1935 pirate classic Captain Blood, except they have a very interesting idea on how to do it. They intend on taking the story of a wrongly imprisoned doctor who escapes to become a pirate into space! My intial thought here was the 1984 film Ice Pirates which is amusing, but nowehere near what the Spierig twins have in mind for "Captain Blood". To read the full story check it out below...
Warner Brothers set John Brownlow to pen a first draft of the script and the studio began to look at directors for the update, little did they think that the Spierig twins would come along and deliver the pitch they did. Warner producer Bill Gerber told Variety, "At first, I felt like I was in that scene in 'The Player,' where Buck Henry pitches the sequel to 'The Graduate.'" Michael and Peter didn't just come to this meeting with idea for a pirate adventure in space, they also came prepared with a powerful animatic presentation. Gerber explained, "But when I took a look at their animatic depiction of a pirate battle in space, it had such a distinctive visual look to it that I said, 'Great, I get it.'" I can only imagine that what Gerber did see was pretty fantastic. The Spierig twins have a great cinematic eye and a pretty far out imagination from what I have seen from them so far. Undead was a lot of fun for another zombie flick and I have been pretty stoaked to see how "Daybreakers" turns out once it releases January 8, 2010.
Bill Gerber stressed that while the film will be changing the setting from the Caribbean to space, the core structure of the story will remain intact. He stressed, "There are some things you don't mess with, and that is as classic a movie storyline as you will ever find." The original film followed Dr. Peter Blood who is wrongly accused of treason and sentenced to slavery on a British colony. Peter Blood falls in love with the British Commander's daughter Arabella Bishop, while within the colony, only to later escape during a Spanish raid leaving he and a number of the other slaves to steal the Spanish ship. The group then begin a life of piracy, however Blood is tested by an evil Captain Levasseur who takes captive the love of Dr. Blood young Arabella Bishop. More news on "Captain Blood" as it develops...
What say you? A revenge filled pirate film set in space gonna work? Have you seen any of the Sierig twins other two films? Strikeback...
