Last night in Los Angeles, Cinetic held a executive screening for Terry Gilliam's latest film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" in hopes to sell the film before it hits Cannes Film Festival next week. THR reports that film makers are hoping to sell the film in the high seven figures.
It is not out of this world to think that this film would sell for the dollar amount film makers are looking for. Gilliam is an highly acclaimed director, even if it has been four years since his last film. Outside of Gilliam, the film is Heath Ledger's last role, which is sure to draw a massive crowd. Add the fact you also have Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Ferrell who stepped in to fill Ledger's role once he had passed away, and it seems a no brainer that the film makers will get what they are asking for. One executive comment on the price point, "If the movie delivers, you're going to see people willing to open their wallets. Even with the high price, you can pick up a marketable movie for a lot less than it costs to make it."
It is not unusual for big title films to be sold outside of Film Festivals, but with Cannes exactly one week away, it does seem a bit premature. Cinetic's idea is warranted although, film festival sales markets have bottomed out and trying to nab a deal outside of Cannes might allow "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" to get a bigger deal.
