Funnyman Jonah Hill recently did an interview with Justin Monroe for Mark Ecko's Complex.com and spoke a bit about his recent fame and his current writing project over at Sony. If you were not aware that Hill is penning his own film, he is and it is the famed television show 21 Jump Street.
It would be hard to think that Jonah Hill would be scripting a serious adaptation of 21 Jump Street and your intution was right. Hill told Complex, "[Sony execs said] they were gonna let me make my kind of movie—an R-rated, insane, Bad-Boys-meets-John Hughes-type movie." Hill continued to explain that if the Sony execs went back on their word he would ultimately leave the project. He said, "I told them the second they don’t, I’m not gonna be involved anymore." That is of course expecting they like his script and do not decide to go another avenue with the big screen adaptation.
Hill was then asked if he thought it strange that fans take the show so seriously when the show is so inherently funny. He replied, "Yeah, if you look at the opening episode of 21 Jump Street, you see a man looking at a picture of a cop holding a little boy’s hand, and you hear a crazy saxophone solo, and you pan up and it’s Johnny Depp looking at the picture playing the crazy saxophone solo." Hill laughed and explained that his film would be an all out action film. "We’re not even spoofing the movie. It’s not strictly comedic, either. We’re doing a full-on action movie, blowing shit up."
Personally, I think Jonah Hill is extremely funny, more so in some ways than Seth Rogen. I truely hope his script is a success and "21 Jump Street" is really fun. More news as it develops...to read the full interview checkout Complex.com
