"Terminator Salvation" releases this month, but that did not stop director McG from talking about where the next film will go with the franchise. Last week sometime McG did a lengthy interview with Film Journal and while he spent the majority of the time focusing on "Terminator Salvation" he did finish off his interview with some insight into where he intends to take the fifth Terminator film. The interesting part of the story is that McG intends to take the film and John Connor back to pre-Judgement Day somewhere around 2011!
"Terminator Salvation" takes place in 2018 before Skynet has perfected it's time traveling abilities. McG says that the sequel will see, "John Connor going to travel back in time and he's going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion." So Connor will be using time travel to go back and try to warn of the impeeding danger of Judgement Day. McG elaborated further, "They've figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you're going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be fucking awesome." I agree McG, I agree.
McG also teased that another face we might recognize from previous Terminator films might pop-up. "I also think he's going to meet a scientist that's going to look a lot like present-day Robert Patrick [who famously played the T-1000 in Terminator 2], talking about stem-cell research and how we can all live as idealized, younger versions of ourselves." Lastly McG said they hope to have the next Terminator film ready for a 2011 release, to tie-into the time traveling storyline. To read everything McG had to say about "Terminator Salvation" and his hope for it's sequel head over to Film Journal.
What say you? Do you like time travel being brought back into the Terminator mix? Does Terminator 5 sound like a good film? Strikeback...
