WB Release Dates Set & Shifted

Earlier this week Warner Brothers announced official release dates on some of their tentpole films including the Green Lantern and the final Harry Potter film. The studio, alongside this list of perspective release dates also shifted one of their films later into the holiday season. Checkout which films will be going head-to-head and which film moved to a new date for greener pastures.

So Warner Brothers has made a couple bold moves and placed some of there tentpole films in the same opening spot as Marvel. First up "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" will release July 15 2011. If you were not aware that is the very same day Marvel's superhero team-up film, "The Avengers" is set to release. How possible is the tenative match-up? Doubtful. "The Avengers" seems aways off still, and with Iron Man 2, Captain America and Thor all set to release before it, "The Avengers" will most likely get a shift as it becomes more clear that the intial release date was a tad premature.

Warner Bros. also announced a tenative release date for Christopher Nolan's next film "Inception." The scifi film will release July 16th 2010, which is also the same day Marvel's "Thor" is set to release. WB putting a second movie on the exact same release date as Marvel is no coincidence, it is very simply strategic! Warner Brothers knows very well that Christopher Nolan will be a huge draw regardless of the film and very much lined up "Inception" to wreak havoc on Marvel's release dates.

The majority of the remaining WB's release dates announced, at this point, are fairly free and clear of any major competition. The studio announced a release date for the popular DC comic "Jonah Hex" starring Josh Brolin and John Malkovich, hitting theaters on August 6th 2010. The remake helmed by The Incredible Hulk's Louis Leterrier, "Clash of the Titans" will fly into theaters March 26th 2010. Zack Synder's next film, "Suckerpunch" has a release date of October 8th 2010 outside of his usual March date.

"The Green Lantern" finally gets a set date of December 17th 2010, which will hopefully make the season that much greener. As previously announced, Martin Campbell is directing the DC comic adaptation, and the studio is currently looking for a possible lead. Current rumors say that Anton Yelchin is being approached after both Emile Hirsch and Ryan Gosling turned down the role.

The last major announcement for Warner Bros. proved that Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" will be shifted from it's November release date to Christmas Day 2009. This move is a bit puzzling considering Christmas Day is already pretty full with both the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel and Disney's "The Princess and the Frog" releasing the same day. Vhristmas Day is generally a family theater going experience and I am not to sure parents will be taking their kids to see a bare knuckle boxing Holmes. James Cameron's "Avatar" releases the week prior to Ritchie's latest, which could also pose another threat to the british sleuth. "Sherlock Holmes" was moved to Christmas after "Knowing" starring Nic Cage was shifted from July to November 13th. Another conisderation, with the Twilight Saga's "New Moon" releasing the following weekend on November 20th, "Sherlock Holmes" could have ended up a huge failure at the box office.
