Gondry Directs Green Hornet?

The Green Hornet has been around since the days of radio and has gone through a various array of transformations. The latest news that hit yesterday definately gives the illusion of a major head-scratcher! Variety reported that Michel Gondry has stepped into the director's chair for the Evan Goldberg written script.

It is widely known that Seth Rogen has been trying to get "The Green Hornet" a shooting date for quite some time now. Rogen and Goldberg hammered out a script for the film and even landed the talented Stephen Chow to star as Kato and also direct the feature film. Chow, back in December of 2008 stepped down from his director duties, but remained on in the role of Kato in spite of all the internet rumors that he would leave the film entirely. Now comes news that Michel Gondry has taken over the position, but what the hell is he going to do with it?

I love Michel Gondry, but The Green Hornet? Gondry has never really made a general box office film or for that matter an action film, so havinghim direct is very puzzling. Something told me Gondry had to have done something in order to have been allowed the title of director on Green Hornet. He is just to outside of the box, it felt, for a film like the Green Hornet.

Well it appears I was right! Seth Rogen spoke with MTV about landing Gondry to direct the film and just what we could expect from the Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind and Science of Sleep director. Rogen told MTV, "To convince the studio to let him do it, he filmed a fight scene on his own," Rogen marveled. "He just hired stunt men and did it by himself!" Rogen was was very pleased at the addition of Gondry to his film elaborated to MTV how Gondry intended to do with his self-financed audition. "Just to show some of the stuff he could do, some of the weird filming techniques he has and some of the stuff he can pull off. I mean, this is something he did in two days and it was instantly unlike anything you've ever seen before," Rogen excitedly replied. He then added, "It was impossible not to hire him once he presented what he could do for it."

Seth Rogen seems extremely pumped that Gondry is onboard to direct. He commented how both of their styles will be utilized in "The Green Hornet." Rogen said, "It should have the type of conversational tone and comedy that me and Evan have been doing — and some of the action that we have been starting to try to do — along with the wild, visual imagination and funny awkward sensibility that he's been doing." On a final note, Rogen made mention of his comments to Gondry just before presenting his footage. He told Gondry, "You have to convince them they're not gonna show up on set one day and everything is gonna be made out of cardboard." Gondry's reply was, "I can definitely do that."
