Director Bryan Singer would like another shot at the X-Men franchise! He recently spoke with Total Film and told the news outlet how big of a shame it is he didn't direct the third film and he has put some real though into directing "X-Men Origins: Magneto". We know that Lauren Shuler Donner would like him back, so what's the hold up? Scroll down to see what Bryan Singer had to say.
Bryan Singer reveals that his intial reclutancy to direct "X-Men Origins: Magneto" surrounds that he has spent quite some time in the Nazi Holocaust. He explains, "The only thing that concerns me about Magneto is that if the prequel were to follow the track I used in X-Men, which is Magneto's history in the concentration camp, then I've lived in that world. Apt Pupil, X-Men and now Valkyrie...I've lived in that Nazi universe for quite a while. I just might need to take a little break before I do something like that." For the record, his time spent in the Nazi universe in X-Men was limited to like 1 minute of film, but having Singer return to X-Men is easily worth the wait. Especially when you consider the alternative is David S. Goyer, who directed the ultimate crap-fest this year called The Unborn.
Singer also expressed his guilt in not staying on the X-Men franchise to direct the third film. He told Total Film, "I'm eternally intertwined with X-Men now. What takes an audience four hours to watch - the first two movies - took six years of my life. So, to not be part of it....It's a shame." He continued to relay how he felt about not making the film. He said, "Before I was watching it, during watching it, after watching it. It's weird for me to watch it, because I'm so close to the universe. And also Brett is a good friend of mine. But, of course, I would love to return to that universe." Bryan Singer is "good friends" with Brett Ratner? Wow, that's an odd couple if I ever saw one.
Let's hope Singer does indeed return to the X-Men franchise in some facet, but I utlimately hope it his him directing "X-Men Origins: Magneto" over Goyer. Lord knows he couldn't do any worse than Ratner or Gavin Hood did with the most recent X-Men films.
In other Bryan Singer news, he also told Total Film that he still wants to do the next Superman film but isn't sure what will come of it. He said, "I don't know, I don't know. There are still issues...I just...I just don't know. I don't necessarily...I don't know. It's one of those things where...It's so weird talking about stuff unless I'm about to ramp up and shoot it."
What say you? Should Singer return for X-Men or Superman? How long are you willing to wait to have Singer back in the director's chaior for a X-Men film? Strikeback...
