Academy Awards Adds Nom's

In major news, the Oscar's have decided to up the ante in the Best Picture category starting next year with the 82 Annual Academy Awards. Variety is reporting that the Academy has decided to have 10 Best Picture Nominations instead of the norm of 5, that we have been use to. This marks the first time in more than 65 years that the Best Picture Nominations have been greater than 5 and the change should prove to really open up the competition.

Last year everyone in and out of Hollywood was shocked that the year's top grossing film The Dark Knight was snubbed in the Best Picture category, however the change from 5 to 10 nominations should allow for the same thing not to happen again. One thing is for sure, this will definately increase the Oscar campaigning come November and on. Films that would have been on the cusp in years past, where studios would have decided to for go any campaigning, will now more than likely promote their films for contention.

Sid Ganis spoke about the change for the Academy and said, "Having 10 best picture nominees is going allow Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize."
