Director Darren Aronofsky's newest film just may be "Black Swan". The director has yet to sign on to a new project since finishing The Wrestler and no current news on the Robocop update he has been working on for MGM has developed at all. This week however came news via various sources including THR that Natalie Portman is now attached to play the lead in the suspense thriller Aronofsky has had in development since 2007.
Since 2007, when "Black Swan" was intially optioned at Universal, the film has made it's rounds through the various studios, gone under a script re-write by Mark Heyman, director Aronofsky has risen to critical acclaim and now Natalie Portman beefs up the star power of the film all leading some to speculate that the film could begin shooting as early as this fall. The film follows "a veteran ballerina (Portman) who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. But it's unclear whether the rival is a supernatural apparition or if the protagonist is simply having delusions."
Darren Aronofsky is a brilliant director and adding Portman definately bolsters the interest in the thriller. What should prove to be a better element to the film is Aronofsky is unlikely to give a cliche ending that makes everyone happy. Instead he will deliver a film that questions what exactly is reality in the film and what is just imagined. More news on "Black Swan" as it develops...
What say you? Does a ballet thriller helmed by Aronofsky sound intriguing? Strikeback...
