Releasing Friday July 11th 2008
Opening this Friday is Meet Dave starring Eddie Murphy as an alien spaceship that houses thousands of miniature Murphy's. This film looks absolutely dreadful and hopefully will bomb at the theaters. Murphy has become far too normal playing many versions of himself since he started it with Coming to America. It seems that every summer now we see yet another film with Murphy playing the majority of the cast. This shtick has grown extremely tiresome and hopefully Murphy will detach himself from doing these horrible films. I'd personally like to see these rumors of a "R" rated Beverly Hills Cop sequel come true and hopefully that will get rid of the bad taste in my mouth from part 3.
Next up is Hellboy 2: The Golden Army directed by Guillermo del Toro. This film looks to have taken what worked from the first hellboy and what gave del Toro all the acclaim in Pan's Labyrinth and combined them into one strong film. The visuals look extremely strong as does the story. Ron Perlman is back and looks to be in full strength and in perfect comedic form as the demon from Hell. All of the previous team is back including a new addition Johann Kraus, who was a key character in the comic book of the same name. This film should take top honors this weekend and knock Hancock out of the #1 spot at the box office!
Another big time action film releasing this weekend is Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D starring Brendan Fraser. A remake of the original of the same name, this film looks to be rely heavily on the 3-D effects and campy humor. Early reviews have been surprisingly strong for this family fun filled adventure and could prove to be a major hit at the box office. Brendan Fraser has sure found his niche in these campy action filled and fluff major production tentpole films with the Mummy series revamping this summer season also.
The last film in major release this week is August starring Josh Hartnett. It is directed by Austin Chick and revolves around two brothers trying to keep their company afloat during August 2001, one month before the September 11th attacks. The film looks to have a promising script and dialogue and could prove to be a unlikely gem of young actor Hartnett.
So what are your predictions? What will be number one at the box office? Will Hancock and Will Smith continue its streak at the top or will Hellboy 2 or Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D knock it off? How well will Hellboy 2 do? Will it break $50 million? In this summer filled with comic book movies will Hellboy 2 fade quickly with The Dark Knight releasing the following weekend? Which with it's heavy tracking and amazingly positive reviews is sure to be the biggest hit of the summer and of all comic book films to date.
