We now have two Sherlock Holmes movies coming our way by two different production companys. Will it be a race to the finish? Will these films come out within close release dates? Brings to mind the disaster flicks of the 1990's when films like Volcano and Dante's Peak released only two months apart in 1997. Both were terrible, let's hope these two Holmes films wont suffer the same fate.
It has been finalized that Robert Downey Jr. will play the infamous London detective Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie's newest film for Warner Bros. Ritchie's version will obvisouly follow Sir Arthur Conan Doyle classic tales, but will also be loosely centered around the comics of the same name. Ritchie is sure to bring his own flare to the Sherlock Holmes series and with his track record of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and this year's RocknRolla Warner Bros. is sure to have a hit. Downey Jr. is a perfect choice to play Holmes and should bring a real buzz to the character. Furthermore Downey Jr.'s quick-toungued wit and self-assured mannerisms will play right into Ritchie's style and the the Sherlock Holmes character. This film will begin shooting in October. (So who knows what will happen with Iron Man 2 now that Favreau has signed on to direct the second film in the series.)
This story comes quick on the heels on another Sherlock Holmes film that will be made by Columbia Pictures which will be a comedic take on the famous sleuth and will star Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell as Sherlock Holmes and his trusted side-kick Watson. The film will be produced by Judd Apatow and could prove to be extremely funny and make the Apatow team and Columbia extreme amounts of money. Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen together are hilarious and did a fantastic job working off eachother in Talladega Nights. One would only expect more of the same hilarity and hijinks with Sherlock Holmes & Watson. Sacha Baron Cohen's over the top characters will play perfectly into Holmes, while Will Ferrell's zany and childlike deliveries will really add to Watson as the side kick. I expect, with good writting, this film could prove to be both hilarious and mystifying.
So which film will make more money? It's a toss up! While both sound extremely promising, both sides are hot in the industry right now. Robert Downey Jr. is on fire after the success of Iron Man and with Tropic Thunder to be a sure hit later this summer, he is on one hell of a roll! (Let's hope Downey Jr. can hold things together this time around, you know we are all pulling for the dynamic actor.) Uber producer Judd Apatow is also "in feugo!" He has not had a miss at the box office lately and with Baron Cohen and Ferrell to bolster up awareness and excitement around the film, it's sure to be a hit. One thing is for sure, you can consider me ready for both!
