Holmes Finds Love in McAdams

Rachel McAdams has been tapped to play Sherlock Holmes love interest in Guy Ritchie's adaptation of the classic sleuth. McAdams will play Irene Adler who appeared in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 1891 story, "A Scandal in Bohemia." The film is set to begin shooting next month for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow following the classic tales and the more recent comic book adaptation. Robert Downey Jr will play Sherlock Holmes, while Jude Law will play his collaborator Dr. Watson and Mark Strong as the villain Blackwood.

Rachel McAdams is no stranger to love stories or portraying the love interest and should settle in very nicely alongside Downey Jr. I am not so sure I like the idea of a love interest however, this gives us the obvious set-up of Holmes having to save Irene Adler from certain peril. This is usually a scape goat in movies and I am tired of it. Damsel in distress becomes all to annoying, just watch Spider-Man 1-3, every film, MJ is about to die in the climax, yawn!

Hopefully Ritchie does not stick to his usual shtick. I recently saw RocknRolla and was thoroughly disappointed! I hope that Ritchie can step out his box, but I am sure we are bound to see his choppy backstory-telling with the sleuth story which leans directly to Ritchie style and how he typically unweaves his films.

What are your thoughts on Rachel McAdams being casted in Sherlock Holmes? Did you know that McAdams was Jon Favreau's first choice to play Pepper Potts in Iron Man, but she turned the role down? Guess RDJ really wanted to work with her!
