Hoffman as Penguin, Not Looking So Hot!

Michael Caine had recently commented about the much talked of sequel to The Dark Knight which he says the studio is persuing bringing out the Riddler and the Penguin with Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman respectively. Well it seems no one has ever asked Philip Seymour Hoffman if he is interested in the role. MTV recently talked with the Oscar winner about the project and he thinks it would be much better to just sit on the sidelines as a fan and see somebody else play the role of Oswald Chesterfield Cobbelpot!

Here's what Seymour Hoffman had to say on the matter of playing the Penguin, “No one has talked to me about it ever — never,” replied Hoffman. “It happened, like, five years ago, too. It was a rumor back then and it’s still a rumor. [laughs] It’s just in the press. It’s funny.” That really didn't answer the question if Hoffman would play the iconic villain, so MTV pressed further asking him if he was approached by Warner Bros, would he in fact take the role. Hoffman answered, “I don’t know. I think I’m more interested in seeing someone else do it. I don’t know if I’d be a good Penguin to be quite honest. [laughs]”

Philip Seymour Hoffman went on to say that he is a huge fam of comic books being a big collector as a kid and that he generally looks forward to comic book movies. Hoffman told MTV reporters, "I am a real cheerleader for them. I want them to do well because those are terrific stories." He went on to relay that he was so much of a fan, that he would rather just watch, than perform in the film. "I’m more a fan, so the interest of being in it isn’t that great. It’s more the interest in wanting to see the next one. It’s probably better that way,”Hoffman said. Hoffman also added that he has never even met Christopher Nolan, but loves what he has done to the character and series. "Maybe I did or met him in passing?" Hoffman added, "What [Nolan]’s doing is taking it in a whole other exciting great place."

Philip Seymour Hoffman clearly displays a general interest in the films, but definately not playing him. I think Hoffman would amazing as Cobblepot, but if his heart is not in it, then it's better that he does not try. My only reserve thought is Hoffman could be playing coy, so WB approaches him with nothing but a perfect offer.

What are your thoughts on Hoffman's statements? Is there just too much reporting for something Nolan probably isn't even thinking about right now? Dude is on a much deserved vacation and who ever thinks Batman 3 would be his next project might as well check themselves into Arkham Asylum!
