Review - Donkey Punch

Three british girls decide to take a holiday to Spain. While partying, the girls run into a group of shipmates, who invite them to continue the party on a luxury yacht. Once out at sea, the party takes a unexpected turn when one of the girl's ends up dead, due to the infamous sex act. The six remaining individuals disagreeing on what to do next, begin a ruthless fight for survival in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.

Being the fourth film released part of the Magnet Six Shooter Film Series, I had really high hopes for "Donkey Punch". Unfortunately, "Donkey Punch" does not live up to it's hype in the slighest, but instead has the viewer counting the minutes still the disaster ends. Written and directed by Oliver Blackburn, "Donkey Punch" feels a couple years too late. It is drastically close in vein to Eli Roth's Hostel with it's setup, but quickly looses the viewer once the infamous act has run it's course. The film leads up to the taboo sex act, but once it's over, so too is your attention.

"Donkey Punch" feels like the whole film revolved around the one scene, while everything else was just thrown together. Even the tagline scene isn't that impressive and ultimately doesn't do the job as was intended. The shock-value to "Donkey Punch" is null and void throughout and the rest of story development and film are simply, badly cherry-picked from other films. "Donkey Punch" furthermore, does nothing to keep the intensity throughout the 99 minute film. The UK movie quickly looses focus and instead turns to the typical horror cliches like, bad desicion making by the females in danger.

The cast of "Donkey Punch" does a decent job and is one of the only strong points to the film. Each cast member pulls off their characters in believable fashion, so much so that "Donkey Punch" has the viewer pulling for one side over the other. Where the casting seemed drastically flawled was the women. For a film that centers on a taboo sex act, the casting director sure didn't look long for some decent looking women. Most of the sex scenes are graphic, but considering the actresses are so unattractive, the scenes go unnoticed.

"Donkey Punch" is a huge let down for something that looked to have a lot of potential, but instead just came across flat and rehashed. The first act does a decent job of building an eerie mood, however that quickly passes once the taboo act has run its course. From there viewer is left with a film that quickly spirals out of control and leaves the viewer unimpressed by the anti-climatic finale. One of the best moments of the film does come towards the end, but it comes off as, too little too late. As the "Donkey Punch" tagline says, "This party is going overboard" it however feels like it is the film that went overboard and not the party. Skip it.
