Sony/Columbia have scrapped the fourth Spider-Man film altogether. News came Monday that Sony/Columbia decided to go back to the origin of Spider-Man as a teen in High School.
This news means that Sam Raimi and all actors contracted for further films will no longer be apart of the Spider-Man franchise. Sony/Columbia intend to hire a all new cast and director to work off a script penned by James Vanderbilt. Their intention is to have a new "Spider-Man" in theaters by 2012. Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin will remain as producers.
This news isn't entirely surprising considering there have been reports of script re-works and Coulmbia and Raimi quarreling over who the villain should be. It's not the first time that a comic book property has been rebooted and it certainly won't be the last. In the context of comic books, a reboot seems fairly obvious considering Marvel and DC both reboot their superheroes on a regular basis. Slap the name Amazing in front of Spider-Man and Spidey fans really have nothing to bitch about. More news on a Spider-Man reboot as it develops...
Updated: (500) Days of Days of Summer director Marc Webb has been mentioned as one director Sony/Columbia is targeting to tackle the "contemporary and gritty" Spider-Man reboot. Webb does seem like a solid choice, but what is more concerning is the words "gritty." Spider-Man isn't gritty, but instead a smart-ass. We've seen the gritty take on Batman and that works, but for Spider-Man I'm not so sure.
