News broke today that famed director Steven Spielberg has decided to pass on directing a remake of "Harvey" leaving 20th Century Fox without a director. At first, the news seemed perfect considering there is no need to remake the classic, but a more in depth look reveals some major reasons for concern. Read the full details after the jump...
If there is one director that could have done justice to a remake of "Harvey", Spielberg seemed like the right guy. Now that hope is gone. Spielberg who originally wanted Tom Hanks for the lead, passed on the role. 20th Century Fox and Spielberg then targeted Robert Downey Jr., who also passed on the role after not seeing eye-to-eye with the iconic director. Spielberg and Fox were left to pick up the pieces, but now only 20th Century Fox is left with the property rights to "Harvey".
At first glance, it would seem that with Spielberg off the project, Fox would abandon the remake altogether. Unfortunately that is not the case. 20th Century Fox intends to move forward with the project. Fox, who has ruined a number of franchises, deciding to make "Harvey" without Spielberg in the directors chair just seems like a bad idea.
Fox had planned for a early 2010 production start to the remake, but now the question is when and who will be involved. Personally, I hope this project gets laid to rest like Spielberg's idea of remaking Oldboy. Although, I'm sure Fox have already lined up a few directors that they believe could pull off the remake. Who knows, they could impress us with another iconic director, but I doubt it. More news on "Harvey" as it breaks...
