Sequel News & Remakes a Plenty!!

We should all be pretty use to the fact that Hollywood and the majority of the studios have always thrived on sequels to their popular franchises. It is pretty much a given. Another cash cow that studios have utilized has been the remake. Both of these approaches have had some real stinkers and some amazing cinema. It has always seemed clear to me, the only reason for a remake is if the film does not play to current generations or it is felt the film can be perfected. Sequels are awesome when done right, but too many times sequels are poorly put together and take away from the original. Regardless of your opinions towards both remakes and sequels, Hollywood is not stopping anytime soon and this week news has come in on a few sequels and remakes that are in the pipeline. Check out the details on a few of them below.

The Sequels:

Steve Guttenberg is trying to get a couple sequels off the ground. Apparently, he feels his stint on Dancing with the Stars may have raised his stake in cinema again. The quarky actor who become famous for his great roles in films like Diner, Police Academy, Short Circuit and Cocoon is looking to jump start two of his more popular roles in sequels.

Three Men and a Bride
Guttenberg would like to see a second sequel to his film Three Men and a Baby that co-starred Tom Selleck and Ted Danson. He told Digital Spy, "Tom Selleck, Ted Danson and I are looking to make another Three Men And A Baby movie. It's called Three Men And A Bride. The script is pretty much written and we are really keen to get that made. We're very hopeful."

The film was based on a french film of the same name which has also spawned two sequels. Although the three stars of the film have no where near the credit they use to in American cinema, I wouldn't doubt Three Men and a Bride gets made. It seems like a no brainer for Disney and regardless of people's awareness of the first two films, it has the makings of a sure hit. Weddings films have always done well here in the U.S. and I am sure there are still a ton of 40 to 60 year old women that swoon over these three actors. I know my mother is one of them!

Police Academy 8
Steve Guttenberg's biggest series was Police Academy which created 6 sequels to date revolving around the goofy police department and academy. Well, it appears that one more Police Academy is in the works, one that will hopefully include the entire original cast and a few of the more recognizable faces from a few of the sequels. Adding to the announcement, Guttenberg himself may step behind the lense to direct Police Academy 8. Guttenberg told the Sun, “We are doing a new movie and it is going to be great fun. A script is being written and so far it is really great, everyone from the original movies who is still around will return.”

Ghostbusters 3
A second sequel to Ghostbusters has been rumored for quite some time now, but no real ground was moved until recently (unless you consider the new video game). It has been reported that NBC's "The Office" writing team have been hired to pen a script and all of the remaining Ghostbusters seem real keen on the idea of a third film.

Signourney Weaver recently talked with MTV about a third film and that she will be meeting with her old pal and cast member Bill Murray about the film. “I’ve heard about it and I’m supposed to get in touch with Bill [Murray] next week.” Weaver seemed very interested where her character would be in the third film. She said, “Does he think we got married or something?” Weaver finished up by saying that if she didn't get a chance to be in the film, her film son, should definately be there. “I would hope that my little Oscar would be one of the Ghostbusters even if I’m not in it!” Dana was a pivotal part of Ghostbusters franchise and I hope Signourney Weaver will be able to return for the sequel.

Zoolander 2
Ben Stiller who seems to be trying to beat Eddie Murphy out for the most sequels of his catalog with sequels to Night at the Museum, Madagascar and Meet the Parents/Fockers. Stiller has re-announced that he would like to work on a sequel to Zoolander. Zoolander released in in the shadow of September 11th 2001 and did not do to well at the box office, but has become a sort of cult hit of Stiller's. It looks like were in store for more Blue Steel!

Stiller told the Sun that he would like to develop a sequel to his male model film. "We’ve been trying to get Zoolander 2 together and we’ve had a few scripts. I feel that it is the sequel I really would like to do some day because I like the original and I would make sure it was something new and worthy of it first." At least, Stiller says that he won't just make a Zoolander sequel to make it, it has to be really really good-looking. Which it seems isn't the case with a second Meet the Parents sequel.

The Remakes:

Arthur
Russell Brand who has been a pretty large name in the UK for some time now, has only recently become a bit of a hit here in the States. Trying to grab a hold of some of Brand's popularity, Warner Brothers are trying to land Brand for a remake of 1980s comedy Arthur.

THR reports that Brand is meeting with scribes to pen up a screenplay. Brand who already has a notorious reputation of leading a sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle could play nicely with the Arthur storyline. For those of you who never had the privilege of seeing the original Arthur, it follows a drunken playboy who is set to inherit a substanial amount of money if he marries an heiress, but instead the seldomly sober rascal falls for a working class female. Arthur, is a film that probably is a tad out of date, but it still a comedy classic. I am skeptical about how well Brand can adapt this film and make it current, but one thing is for sure his latest popularity from Forgetting Sarah Marshall and its currently filming spin-off, "Get Him to the Greek" is sure to add to the anticipation.

They Live!
Jon Carpenter is a genius when it comes to horror and his cult classic They Live! is a great campy scifi film that I have loved since its release back in the late 1980s. The original starred, Rowdy Roddy Piper of the formerly WWF, who delivered time and time again throughout with his rare rash form of sarcasm. One of my favorite lines came from Piper saying, "I have come to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum!" The film dripped of sarcasm and social satire mixed with its scifi storyline along with Piper kicking some major ass, one fight sequence last over 5 minutes even. In the film Piper finds a pair of sunglasses that allows him to see humanity for what it really is. When wearing the sunglasses, Piper sees thousands of aliens living among us on Earth, the aliens control us through sub-conscience advertising. It sounds hoky, it was hoky, but was one helluva film!

Universal is in final negotiations to acquire the film rights to They Live with Marc Abraham and Eric Newman set to produce. The remake will be financed by Strike Entertainment a division of Universal with Carpenter returning as executive producer THR reports. With final negotiations for rights still under way for They Live, no writers have been hired or a time table for its release.

Romancing the Stone
Romancing the Stone is really a timeless film, but needless to say, Fox is developing a remake for the 1984 film that starred Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. The studio has tapped Daniel McDermott (Eagle Eye) to write a draft reports THR. In the original film Kathleen Turner plays a romance novelist to who travels to Columbia to save her missing sister. Before long Turner is stuck in the middle of the Columbian jungle with Michael Douglas playing a soldier of fortune, who aides her in finding her sister and solving the mystery behind the package her sister mailed her before she went missing.

Romancing the Stone was a favorite film of mine as a child, one that I still will watch from time to time and throughly enjoy each and every time. I can see the film doing well as a remake, however it is timeless and does not warrant one. This is an opportunity to just cash in on a younger generation who would enjoy the film with a younger and updated cast. You know like Gerard Butler and Scarlett Johansson.

The Karate Kid
This has to be the worst news to come out of this article. Variety reports Columbia Pictures is developing the remake to the 1984 film with Will Smith's son, Jaden set to star. Seriously, Jaden Smith? Sure he was good in Pursuit of Happyness with his Pop's, but to lead a remake of The Karate Kid? No way, no how! I really wish Will Smith wasn't pimping his kid around and destroying perfect films. Dad will destroy Oldboy, while son destroys The Karate Kid, what's next Jada Pinkett Smith will remake Rosemary's Baby?

The Karate Kid is a perfect film and still plays very well to any audience. It is the definition of a timeless movie. It captures high school anxieties and culture so well, there is no need for a remake. I repeat, no need! Pat Morita and Ralph Maccio together were perfect and there is no way, Columbia will be able to come anywhere near the original with Jaden Smith. I guess the film will be set in Elementary School, because Jaden is only 10 years old. One of the great things about the original Karate Kid was how real Daniel (Ralph Maccio) felt. He was a typical scrawny high school teenager who was bullied and has had enough and wanted to learn martial arts. Jaden is 10 years old, so the antagonist to Smith will be stealing his milk money, or pushing him down at dodge ball? Who the hell does Paramount want to sell this film to? 12 and younger it will appeal to, but older teens and adults will not be going to see a 10 year (son of a real famous actor), do martial arts and try to recreate something that can just be watched at home.

It gets worse, Jaden Smith wants to remove the legendary final move, "the crane". Are you freaking kidding me? Just rob my childhood why don't you Jaden Smith! No Crane, WTF is this kid thinking! This is the reason why Paramount has decided to remake The Karate Kid, so they can update and rape the Crane? Screw that! I really hope that huge truck loads of hate begin to surround this remake and ultimately the film fails miserablely!

Any of these long lost sequels or remakes appeal to you? Steve Guttenberg actually admitted to having regreted not accepting the sequel to Short Circuit. My love for Will Smith has dwindled based off the fact that he is pimping his kid all around Hollywood and now sullying classic films! Strikeback....
