For anybody that really was in love with Brandon Routh as Superman, sorry to burst your bubble, but there is no chance he'll be wearing the costume again. Yesterday Warner Brothers named our new Man of Steel for the upcoming adventure being directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan. Find out who will be dawning the blue tights and red cape after the jump...
British actor Henry Cavill most well known for his role on Showtime's "The Tudors" is our new Superman. Sources from Warner Brothers say that Cavill has been in the top tier of candidates for a long time. This isn't Cavill first attempt at landing the super role either. He was a top candidate back when McG was on board to direct only to lose the role to Brandon Routh after Bryan Singer stepped in to direct "Superman Returns." THR says that Cavill was called back in January to have a one-on-one with Zack Snyder leading up to yesterday's announcement which was decided about a week ago.
Cavill certainly has the look of Superman/Clark Kent and his acting skills are up to par, but this casting doesn't really grab me one way or the other. Cavill is a strong performer and should be able to pull off the role no problem, but his lack of star power may be a huge factor. If you ask the average Joe on the street who Henry Cavill is you are going to get a ton of blank faces and "I don't knows." Essentially the same thing WB had with Brandon Routh. This next Superman installment is really gonna be on the back of Zack Snyder and Christopher Nolan to get people interested in seeing another movie. It would seem Warner's is gonna have to push heavily on their previous titles in advertising. Stuff like; "From the mind that brought you The Dark Knight and the director of 300 comes "The Man of Steel."" Maybe I'm wrong, but Superman Returns did not have a warm reception and I'm not so sure this time the general audiences reaction will be any different.
Stay tuned for more on the Superman project as it develops...
