If you are not familiar with Joe Carnahan, his last movie was the ridiculously high-octane action The A-Team last starred Liam Neeson. Carnahan also directed Smokin' Aces along with the 2002 indie crime thriller Narc. Carnahan will be re-teaming with Neeson in "The Grey." Joining Neeson in the cast are Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Nonso Anozie, and Joe Anderson.
Carnahan recently spoke with Deadline about making "The Grey" without a distributor lined up. Carnahan expressed how excited he was to be doing a movie on his own and not under the watchful eye of a major studio again. "I haven’t had a situation like this since Narc, where there’s no distributor, but you get to make the movie you want to, staying as light on your feet as you can." I happen to wholeheartedly with Carnahan's sentiments. I far prefer when a director is able to take a story they created and get it done without a major studio stepping on their toes. Too often studios will change a director's original intention.
Carnahan also mentioned how excited he is to be filming a "man vs. nature" movie in harsh elements. "In a way, it’s great, because it beats the shit out of the cast and that suits the storyline." He told Mike Fleming that while going through locations in 30 below freezing temperatures he was getting frostbite on his skin in a matter of minutes.
"The Grey" begins shooting next week and has a planned 40-day shoot. Stay tuned for more details as they emerge.
