New Breed of Mortal Kombat

Were you satisfied with the Mortal Kombat movies? Some were and some bitterly disappointed. I come down right about in the middle. The first 1995 film was okay. It's fun for what it is, but it wasn't gory or violent much like the video games are. Fast forward to now and we have a group of individuals who want to make a Hard R-rated Mortal Kombat movie for the masses. They want to make a bloody and gory Mortal Kombat so bad they've even gone ahead and filmed test footage to hype up the Warner Brothers brass into financing the project. Take a look at the test footage (which plays like a prologue) below along with a few more details on the new breed of "Mortal Kombat"




First things first. The footage was directed by Kevin Tancharoen who helmed last year's Fame remake. The fighting choreography was all put together by Larnell Stovall. Stovall has been doing stunts and choreography dating back into the early 2000's and is a fairly well respected fight choreographer. Michael Jai White (Spawn and Black Dynamite) played Jacks aka Jax, Jeri Ryan (Star Trek: Voyager) played Sonya Blade, Lateef Crowder (Undisputed III) played Baraka, Ian Anthony Dale played Scorpion and Matt Mullins played Johnny Cage.

From the footage, I'd give these two the job. I'd like seeing a realistic approach put to the Mortal Kombat storyline, even if it is becoming Hollywood's latest trend. Regardless of whether Mortal Kombat deals with dragons and mysticism or hyper-reality, the tone of the film looks a lot better than the camp we got from the previous two films.

So how close is this from happening? That answer is still very cloudy. WB want to reboot the franchise. Tancharoen's approach melds with everything Warner has done as of late, so it is not impossible to think they will green light the project. Currently imdb has "Mortal Kombat" slated for 2013. At this point it is unclear if Oren Uziel has finished the script or if he is even still attached after this new material coming from Tancharoen hit the net. It could be that Tancharoen has a whole different take than Uziel, or they could be working collaboratively. The short answer is, I don't know.
