Spider-Man Webs Two More

News surrounding the Spider-Man reboot has been fairly mum the last few months, but now we've got two official castings within the last two weeks. Sony's darling Emma Stone has been cast in the role of Gwen Stacy while Rhys Ifans has been locked in as Dr. Curt Conners aka The Lizard. Read a full breakdown below...


I'll start with Rhys Ifans. Ifans is an amazing actor and should settle in nicely as Curt Conners. Ifans was announced earlier this week, but without a real report on who he'd play. Yesterday however, The Wrap reported that he would indeed be playing the Lizard. While the studio has not denied the claim, I wonder if Ifans role in the reboot will be similar to Dylan Baker's in the previous 3 films produced by Sony. Meaning, I'm wondering if Ifans will actually become the Lizard and take on Spidey or has he been cast just to play Dr. Curt Conners?

Its a little sad that Dylan Baker was never allowed to become the Lizard in the previous installments, but with Ifans talents onboard there is no reason to complain. After all, this is a business. Sony has decided to reboot and with a reboot, you kinda got to recast. One huge question mark of recasting is J. Jonah Jameson. J.K. Simmons is Jameson and it will be interesting to see if Sony brings him back or finds someone else to play the temperamental editor-in-chief.

On to the older casting news. Emma Stone has been selected to play Gwen Stacy. In the comics, Stacy is the second love interest of Peter Parker. Having Stacy also leads me to believe that this time around Peter Parker will be in college. At least I hope so. We don't need to see him back in High School. Have him as an undergraduate at Empire State University and Stacy meet him in the Science department. Just seems like the right decision. As for Emma Stone, she is a quality actor and has a general appeal that should work just fine for Gwen. I know a number of men who swoon over Stone, so the idea that Peter Parker does the same, doesn't feel like that much of a stretch. Apparently Stone and Andrew Garfield had perfect chemistry in tests and considering how much Sony seems to rightly love her, I'm interested to see what comes of Stone as Stacy.

As for the Spider-Man reboot itself, I'm not sold. The last 3 films are still very fresh in my memory and going back through a re-hash of what we've already seen doesn't get me excited. Put it this way, their are things that could be improved upon in the original trilogy, but not much and switching around villains and adding some new faces doesn't generate enough interest to get me running out to the theater. Now once shooting has begun and we start to see some footage, I very well may change my tune, but for now considering me only slightly engaged to see how the reboot turns out. Another thing, can we get an official title already! I'm partial to the "Amazing Spider-Man" or "Spectacular Spider-Man."
