Remakes and reboots are inevitable these days. We as consumers gotta just get use to them. One remake that has been slowly progressing for a while now is "The Crow" and this week news is circulating that one time B-Boy Marky Mark Wahlberg has been offered the lead role. Take a look at the full breakdown below...
It has been a number of years since Mark Wahlberg was dancing around on MTV, but when this latest news broke I couldn't help but think of the Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Why? Well in the original film and comic The Crow hails from a metal band or goth band and the thought of Mark Wahlberg playing a dark and ominous character like Eric Draven gives me a giggle. In an alternate universe I could imagine this installment of The Crow having a Marky Mark and his Funky Bunch becoming the Crow. Now obviously this won't happen, but you gotta admit those of you who remember the Funky Bunch got a 'lil laugh out of the idea. To make it even more interesting maybe they could get Vanilla Ice to be the leader of the rival gang who murders Eric. I envision Vanilla Ice and his crew screaming, "Ice it up! Ice it up! Ice it up!" versus "Fire it up! Fire it up! Fire it up!" from the original comic adaptation.
Previously Nick Cave was brought on to polish up writer/director Stephen Norrington's script which is said to have lost the goth aspect of the original comic. The update is also said to take place in a Southwest setting as well as Detroit. Since Cave was hired however not much news has broke on the property and there is no telling exactly how this script is shaping up.
Now I love Nick Cave. He is a genius. Sadly, I do not feel the same way about Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg has rarely impressed me and I can't say I want to see him as The Crow. As for director Stephen Norrington, he too is hit and miss. I love the original Blade, but the rest of his work is pretty iffy. If Wahlberg is cast, I really hope this project doesn't turn out to be a waste of time. We've certainly seen enough bad Crow movies to last a generation. Its time we get a Crow movie that comes close to the enjoyability of the 1994 version that starred Brandon Lee.
UPDATED:
Shortly after posting the original scoop news surrounding the Relativity Media reboot of James O'Barr's "The Crow" broke that director Stephen Norrington has left the project. Norrington has been quoted as saying, "An unnamed star had gotten involved with the movie. The star supposedly loved Norrington's vision and wanted to work with him, but then rejected the Norrington/Cave script and asked for a completely new take from a completely new writer." Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess which unnamed star Norrington is talking about. As for Mark Wahlberg, fuck him! For him to come in and want to scrap Nick Cave's script is idiocy. Cave is a master and even without reading his script I know I'd rather have seen Cave's version than anything else. As far as I'm concerned, my interest went from high to zero! I hope this reboot falls flat on its face!
