Trailer - The Myth of the American Sleepover

Every once in a great while a movie comes along that captures our youth so well it knocks me back, this year that movie is David Robert Mitchell's "The Myth of the American Sleepover." The official trailer for the soon to release independent film about teens in the final days of summer is online and I had to share it with you. Not only that but I want to generate some serious interest in people going out and seeing this movie. This is not a film to be swept under the rug and forgotten about. It is a movie that needs to be heralded and promoted through word of mouth among our friends, families and co-workers.

First off Balthrop, Alabama's song "Love to Love You" which plays over the course of the trailer is fantastic and it is a perfect example of how this movie captures the innocence, loneliness and intimate feelings we have in our teen years. The trailer gives you a solid idea of what to expect with "The Myth of the American Sleepover" but I can't say that it does the best job. This film is not your typical teen romp by any means. It is a slow-paced film that beautifully captures the emotions of our youth that we all can relate to. In many ways "The Myth of the American Sleepover" is like George Lucas's "American Graffiti" following a variety of teens over the course of the final weekend of summer but it is very much its own movie as well. It is a brave film that wouldn't succumb to the usual cliches teen movies do.

Enough of me waxing on about how beautiful David Robert Mitchell's film is for now because I need to tell you how to see it! "The Myth of the American Sleepover" will open exclusively in New York City on July 22nd at the Agenlika Theater. The following weekend, July 29th, the film will open in Los Angeles at the Nuart Theater. Using the same pattern Detroit will get the poetic teen drama on August 5th at the Main Art Theater. For now those are the only 3 U.S. cities selected for a theatrical release but that could change depending on how well the film does in its selected markets. For those of you who do not live in the initial 3 city release, starting July 27th you will be able to order "The Myth of the American Sleepover" from the comfort of your own home via Video On Demand or VOD. Personally I recommend seeing this theatrically, but getting a group together at home and enjoying the movie is a very nice compromise for those who do not have the option of going to see it in theaters.

Friends and readers in Los Angeles I am urging you to come and see "The Myth of the American Sleepover" opening night Friday July 29th at the Nuart Theater. Come support thoughtful and inspiring film making of David Robert Mitchell with me. This is David Robert Mitchell's directorial debut and I guarantee his name is on the rise. Head over to the Nuart's website to buy tickets now! I will be at the 7:30 showing.
