Like seeing good movies? How about hearing cast and directors talk about them? Live in the Los Angeles area? Well you are in luck, KCET recently kicked off their summer Cinema Series. It is a two month series showcasing 8 new movies and 1 special screening of a very special Johnny Mercer scored film. Every Tuesday for 9 weeks over summer at the classic Aero theatre you will see 1 movie including a Q&A with cast and filmmakers moderated by film journalist Pete Hammond. Checkout details below...
The special series kicked off May 31st with writer/director Mike Mills latest film "Beginners" starring Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent. The film follows a man in his late 30's whose 75 year-old father reveals two major announcements; one he is gay and two he has terminal cancer. "Beginners" releases this Friday June 3rd in Los Angeles and New York and will expand in the following weeks.
Tuesday June 7th, KCET Cinema Series features director Chris Weitz's film "A Better Life" starring Demain Bichir (Weeds) as a illegal immigrant struggling to provide a better life for his son growing up in Los Angeles. "A Better Life" will release in New York and Los Angeles on June 24th with expansion to select cities to follow.
On Tuesday June 14th, first time director David Robert Mitchell's "The Myth of the American Sleepover" will screen. David Robert Mitchell will be onsite for the Q&A immediately following the movie that received high praise at this year's Cannes Film Festival. "The Myth of the American Sleepover" follows a group of young adults in the final weekend of summer and releases July 22nd in limited theaters.
June 21st the Summer series rolls on with a sure to be compelling documentary "Page One: Inside the New York Times" directed by Andrew Rossi who had nearly unrestricted to the New York Times during a period when the face of media is changing around them. A lively Q&A with Andrew Rossi will immediately follow. "Page One: Inside the New York Times" releases June 17th.
While the rest of the schedule is still yet to be confirmed we do know that the week of June 28th the Cinema Series will screen the highly anticipated "Larry Crowne" written and directed by Tom Hanks. Co-writer Nia Vardalos will be present for the Q&A following the film. Stay tuned for more details and coverage as the KCET Cinema Series presses on through summer.
