Universal Revising Cobain Biopic

Back in 2007 Universal optioned a biopic based on the life of grunge rock icon Kurt Cobain. The film is based off the 2001 biography, Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain written by Charles R. Cross. Coming off his Oscar nomination for "The Messenger," Oren Moverman is in final talks with Universal to modify the script and direct the untitled biopic. Read the full article below...

This is not the first film to focus on Kurt Cobain, however it will be the first film to span the Nirvana frontman's career and death. In 2005, director Gus Van Sant made Last Days, which chronicled Kurt Cobain's final days before his untimely death. While Van Sant's film is primarily a work of fiction, the current script is based off a book that also included its own bit of fiction.

Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain is the most complete biography, but it is tainted by Cobain's wife Courtney Love. Love who gave Charles R. Cross complete access to Cobain's most personal stuff, has always been labeled by her desire to spin the life of her late husband one way. More simply put, Courtney Love has an agenda.

The latest news has me hopeful that writer/director Oren Moverman will be able to remove most of Courtney Love's agenda. That idea is great in theory, however the real truth of the matter is that, Love remains an executive producer on the biopic. To make matters worse, so is her trusty lawyer Howard Weitzman. So who knows if this project will ever be able to make it in front of cameras. Universal knows they can't release just any old Kurt Cobain biopic and keeping Courtney Love and her agenda reigned in, just may prove to be a constant deterrent.
