Director Pierre Morel has been reading Herbert's original novel since he was 15 years old. Morel has had a 30 year relationship with the six volume series, reading each of the separate book multiple times. Keeping that in mind, it is very clear, that Morel knows his stuff when it comes to the scifi material.
The director previously expressed his intentions to focus on Herbert's original novel in the film planned for a 2012 release. He told MTV, "[My movie] is all about the first book. I’m trying to be very respectful to the original novel." With Morel pushing for a more respectful film, newly hired writer Chase Palmer will be ensuring that tone is met.
Chase Palmer previously scripted the 2002 film Neo-Noir and is currently pegged to direct his own script titled "Number 13," a murder mystery which takes place on the set of an Alfred Hitchcock production.
Hiring Chase Palmer to add Morel's ideas is perfect in theory, but how well those ideas come across is yet to be seen. Morel himself knows that making "Dune" accessible to everyone is a very hard challenge. Hard-core fans of the series are very opinionated and finding a balance that mixes well for them and general audiences is a challenge that Morel is ready to tackle. He explained, "There's a lot of expectation, all the readers will be waiting for me with their shotguns. All the non-readers will also be waiting for us, because it's such a complex, rich novel and you have to make it accessible to those who have not read the book. So, it's a tough challenge but I'm very excited about that."
From what I've seen and heard from director Pierre Morel, I pretty excited to see how this new "Dune" turns out. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
