Nostalgia Patrol - Triplets

Last week we found out that Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase were getting back together in some form and today news comes down the pike that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito will re-team for a sequel to Twins titled "Triplets" with Eddie Murphy being the third brother. Let that soak in for a minute and then read on...

My nostalgia siren went off at full blast reading the headlines for this. I thought Schwarzenegger must have something juicy on DeVito for him to agree to do this. Why on Earth would Universal and these guys want to go back and tarnish something fans remember fondly? That is a rhetorical question and the answer is easy; because Twins has name recognition and a sequel will most likely make a bunch of money. As I have yammered long-winded about repeatedly on this site, studios are looking for name recognition and franchise possibility.

Arnold Schwarzenegger getting back into movies after his botched attempt as California's governor is something that plenty are excited about and eagerly anticipating. The reality is we are still waiting to see how big of an impact his return to the box office will produce. I can only assume just like the various studios as they prepare projects for the former governor, that his return will turn a mighty profit. But who knows, perhaps he is too old for the younger generation? Could this equal another wasted investment for Universal? Then again, this film feels like it calls to an older generation anyway. This movie is not going after The Hangover or Project X audiences. I'm sure "Triplets" would like their business as well, but it'll be targeting the parents of The Hangover's audience. Or am I wrong? Perhaps Danny DeVito can persuade some of the 'Always Sunny in Philadelphia' writers to put together the script for "Triplets"? Can this turn out to be a hip and hilarious project? Right now all you've got to go on is the talent.

THR broke the news that Universal has a plan in place to make "Triplets" with Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to the roles of experimentally conceived brothers Vincent and Julius. This time they discover they have a third brother, again, this is where Eddie Murphy steps in. Presently there is no director attached and no script has been written. Ivan Reitman who directed the original, will only serve as producer this time around. So it is anybody guess how good this could be. With the right writing team and director, this could be actually a riot. Let's make no mistake all three of these guys were at one time (and may still be) gold on the silver screen. Chances are although, this project will end up doing nothing more than tarnishing our memory of Twins.
