Paul W.S. Anderson is one of those directors that I rarely get excited about his projects. Let's be honest, most of the stuff he's done or been involved in has been junk. Sure, he takes on some cool properties that I dearly enjoy, however the end result has never been satisfactory. Simply everything he's directed after his first two features has been a major letdown and there's even room for debate on those first two films. Anyways, enough bad mouthing, news broke surrounding
Summit Entertainment and Anderson's
3D "
The Three Musketeers" yesterday and the news is actually promising. Read the full casting details after the jump...
If reports are true, "
The Three Musketeers" are all locked in along with some of their foes. The original three musketeers will be
Ray Stevenson,
Luke Evans and
Matthew Macfadyen. Stevenson is the best name of the bunch, who previously played the
Punisher and is currently filming "
Thor" playing the role of
Volstagg for
Marvel.
Matthew Macfadyen can be seen next in Ridley Scott's "
Robin Hood" while
Luke Evans was recently in "
Clash of the Titans." Stevenson is setup to play Porthos, while Evans and Macfadyen will play Athos and Aramis.
"
The Three Musketeers" would not be whole without the youngest of the group,
D’Artagnan.
Logan Lerman who recently starred in "
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" is in final negotiations to play
D'Artagnan. This news all but confirms that Lerman will not be playing
Spider-Man as rumored previously.
That's not all. I haven't even gotten to the best casting coming out of this news yet. Reports say that
Christoph Waltz will take on the holy robes as
Cardinal Richelieu. Waltz who previously played Colonel Hans Landa in Tarantino's
Inglourious Basterds will make a perfect Richelieu to oppose the Musketeers. Also cast in a villainous role is
Mads Mikkelsen as
Count de Rochefort. Rochefort is the evil right hand of Cardinal Richelieu and Mikkelsen should make a solid version of the numerously played role.
Like any
Paul W.S. Anderson flick,
Milla Jovovich (Anderson's wife) is in the movie. Jovovich has been cast as Milady de Winter. A character described as “
17th century Bond girl,” also a former lover of Athos. An offer is also out to
Orlando Bloom to play the Duke of Buckingham. Although I highly doubt that anything will formulate from the offer.
While I'm intrigued by the cast of this updated version to "
The Three Musketeers" I can't help but think, do we really need another version of this movie? The
3D angle is not a real selling point for a Musketeers flick in my eyes. Not to mention we've seen a pretty solid version of this film back in
1993. Something else keeps coming up in my head, just because a movie has a great cast, doesn't mean the movie will be good. Let us not forget that
Warner Brothers are developing their own version of '
The Musketeers' with
Doug Liman attached to direct. More news is sure to come on this project as it develops, stay tuned...
